Materials for Waterborne Coating Formulation
Polyurethane dispersions (PUD)
Polyurethane (PU) as a group, is one of the best of binders for coatings due to PU’s excellent mechanical film properties: flexibility, toughness, to name a few. Traditionally this type of binders are applied in two pack, a pre-polymer to cross link with an isocyanate oligomer hardener, in an organic solvent medium. Two pack PU coatings have been used to coat a variety of surfaces, ranging from aircrafts, to cars, furniture, etc.
Over the last decade, great advances have been made on waterborne polyurethane dispersion (PUD) technology. It is now possible to disperse predesigned, pre-made and very high molecular weight polyurethane (PU) or modified PU polymers in an aqueous medium. Coatings made from these new generation of PUDs can be apply to a great variety of surfaces in a safer and more convenient one pack system and still have excellent performance properties.
